Review of MealPal - London

MealPal offers Londoners under £5 meals from select restaurants. If you buy your lunch everyday as I do, this scheme seems like a very good deal.

In fact it is. They offer two plans - 12 meals (£4.79 per meal) and 20 meals (£4.39 per meal). You  pay the monthly fee at the start of the plan and you have 30 days to use your meals. You can only get your meal during weekdays (Monday - Friday). Bank holidays and weekends are excluded.

The window to reserve you meal opens from 17.00 the previous day to 9.30 the next day. You can log in to their website and reserve your meal. You also have to choose the pick-up time so that your meal is ready when you arrive.

To pick up your meal you just have to show your confirmation email. No waiting in the queue.
Now that we have finished about describing the service. Let's get to the good and the bad.

Good:

  1. You pay less than the menu price in some restaurants thus offering some saving.
  2. No waiting in the queue
  3. The whole process is very easy. You can filter you meals based on place and cuisine. You can also check the exact ingredients so that you can check for allergies.
  4. Placing the order and pick-up is simple and easy. You just have to remember to do it during the time slot. They also have an app for iOS and android.

Some things to keep in mind:

  1. Some forward planning is required. If you choose a 20 meal plan and if there are not 20 working days in your 30 day window, then you will lose your unused meals.
  2. Similarly you have to decide what you are going to have for lunch the previous day.
  3. You can only try out that one particular dish the restaurants as to offer on the day. No option to change the menu or try a different a different dish. For example: if you fancy chicken and the restaurant close to you or preferred serves fish, you may have to try a different place.

Future improvements:

  1. Nutritional value of the meal can be provided for those who are into fitness.
  2. Possibility to be able to carry forward unused meals.
  3. Option to have your meal ready or be served hot when you arrive.

Steps to perform lighting calculations

1) Understand the different types of luminaries, their control strategy and power requirements.

2) Determine the required illuminance levels for that room. Check if task lighting needs to be provided.

3) Get the following details, ceiling type, ceiling height, environment indoor or outdoor, maintenance.

4) Select the fitting - should meet the design criteria in terms of power required, protection rating, lumens output and mounting requirement.

5) Model and calculate in Dialux or Relux. Some manufacturers have calculations on their website.

6) Check if light distribution meets you design criteria like uniformity, glare.

Observations on the London tube

Journey on the tube is mostly quiet with only the sounds of the announcement and the train distinct.

Most are buried in their reading material either the newspaper or a book. Kindle being the popular device to read a book on. If it is a newspaper it will mostly be the metro or evening standard. But in the morning when you approach central London, you can see people reading the financial times. There are some who will read irrespective of how crowded the train is.

While the younger generation are mostly confined to social media, with Facebook being the popular choice. There are certain number of annoying people who will be talking loudly on their phones (especially noticeable in the metropolitan line). Some take it further by listening to loud music on their fancy headphones.

The most popular game played by woman is candy crush or other form of matching games, while men play football based manager games or puzzles including candy crush. I will be asking people on their choice of games and make a list. It will be extremely difficult considering how people are to having a conversation.

In the evening, it is back to using the phones again. I mean can you blame them.

P.S. I wrote this post while on the way to work on the tube.

2048 Puzzle Tips and Tricks

The game 2048 is not a difficult if you know a few tricks. If you new to the game, start out with Practice 5x5. The board is bigger and you can undo up to the last 20 moves.
Begin the game by swiping left or right. This will convert the 2's and 4's into 8's and 16's.You can do this blindly without putting much thought into your moves. When you run out of moves, swipe in the other direction (left/right).

If you can not combine any more, then swipe down. Then start again with the left and right swipe technique. Other combinations I use is left and down (L&D) and right and down (R&D). Only switch between these combination when you have no more tiles to combine. Avoid swiping up unless you have a plan in mind. If you follow this methods, you should have your biggest numbers 64, 128 and 256 at the bottom row. From now on you need to take it slow and think about your moves.

It is the same swipe combos L&D and R&D. Again avoid swiping up. You do not want a smaller number (2 or 4) in the midst of your big numbers. This will make them hard to convert and will also take up valuable space at the bottom. If they do end up at the bottom, you have to act fast to increase their range.

Get your 32's, 64's and 128's close of each other and think about how you can combine them. If you blindly swipe you wont reach beyond 512.

Will be adding more images soon.

Guide to Rail Replacement Services - London

When any of the London's rail networks (underground, overground, TFL, DLR) are closed for maintenance, there are usually replacement services or special services to cover the disrupted areas. Finding your nearest service can be bit tough for someone new to the area.

These disruptions will mostly be during the weekends and if your station is going to be affected, you will see notices at the entrance and exit about the planned maintenance. All stations will put up notices about the maintenance work but the stations specifically affected will have additional information about the replacement bus services. This would include timings of the service and the bus stops. The bus stop will usually be the one nearest to the station and will have the sign saying "Rail replacement services stop here". On the streets or lamp posts you may see the sign boards saying "Rail replacement bus", these are route direction for the bus driver and not for the public. Do not follow these signs unless you want to walk to your destination.
Also to be noted is that the service is free of cost and therefore you need not buy a ticket or use your oyster card.

If you use the journey planner on the TFL website, it will tell you if you need to use the replacement bus service or not.Another thing of note is, if your train into London is delayed and if you so happen to miss your connecting services, contact any of the staff on the station, they must arrange a means of transport (taxi, bus) or provide a compensation for the delay.

Disclaimer: Since the railway network at some times can be unreliable and prone to sudden changes, the author of the article is not responsible for any travel inconveniences that may occur because of the information present here. Please check your local travel information before your journey.
